Symbolism

The Victorians used objects, mostly flowers, to represent feelings and emotions. This symbolism appeared in many aspects of daily life, including art, jewellery and funerary monuments. These monuments are also a showcase of the stonemason's skill. There are also examples of Masonic symbolism and headstone carvings which can represent a deceased's occupation or interest. Many of these are found in the oldest quarter of the Cemetery, a short distance from the Visitor Centre.

Clasped hands represent a final farewell or a last goodbye. The person who dies takes the hand of their spouse leading them to heaven.

The set square and compass are symbols of the Freemasonry movement.

The anchor which can be for a seafaring person is also representative of the virtue of hope.
