Ford Park Cemetery is a 34.5 acre green open space in the heart of Plymouth city centre.
When first opened in 1848 this Victorian cemetery would have been on the outskirts of the city surrounded by farm and park land. Today urban life has wrapped itself around the site – making it all the more precious for passive recreation and quiet reflection.
First and foremost the cemetery is a place for burial and remembrance. Ford Park Cemetery Trust recognises that the cemetery landscaping is an important part of its intention to increase the number of burials there.
The cemetery landscape is also valued by visitors as a beautiful place to walk and get in touch with the seasons and enjoy the abundant bird and plant life.
Ford Park Cemetery Trust has invested significant time and resources to improving the landscape including the planting of over 500 trees. A tree memorialisation scheme is available as an environmentally friendly way of remembering someone.
The maintenance and grass cutting regime encourages self seeding of wild flowers which gives a soft country feel in contrast to the more formal landscape in the original burial ground near the chapels in the south west quarter of the present cemetery.
There are many opportunities to learn more about the landscape and this open space with organised events including Dawn Chorus gatherings and guided tours.
