Ford Park Cemetery is a unique classroom Hundreds of local school children have visited the 34.5 acre site to learn about Victorian symbolism and life in their home city during the Victorian times and World War II.
Hyde Park junior school pupils have made repeat visits – the latest being in March when 90 children aged seven and eight years old had a guided tour by cemetery volunteer Sharon Endacott to learn about symbols on memorials.
Teacher Jane Banbury said: “This is not the first time our pupils have visited the cemetery for lessons. The children find it interesting and like the examples of symbolism on headstones and the fresh air. We are lucky to have this right on our doorstep.”
Ford Park Cemetery Trust Chairman Dr Henry Will said: “This visit of children from Hyde Park Junior School brings the total number of children who have visited the cemetery in recent years to around 750. We love having them and from the feedback they give us they seem to enjoy their visits as much as we do. We regard school visits as a very important part of our work.”
